Nairn Arts Society

Welcome to the Nairn Arts Society blog, a page where you can delve into and find out what we have been up to recently. It will give a flavour of the exciting art and crafting workshops and tutored art classes we regularly put on in our exclusive art venue of Laing Hall in the stunning seaside town of Nairn.

What an incredible workshop with Artist – Kay Macdonald, the subject was “Mixed Media”

November 2023

Saturday 25 November 2023 saw 11 members of the Nairn Arts Society gather together at Laing Hall to attend a workshop on “Watercolour Landscapes for Beginners” by Esther Armstrong.

Starting off, Esther took the group through the basic equipment required, including type of paper, brush type and additional items to give different effects (such as cling film, bubble wrap even down to cut up credit cards!)

It was then onto the practical demonstration, and even painting upside down Esther results were amazing!

Then it was our turn! Dividing our paper into four areas gave us plenty of practice with the minimum of paper, a great idea, and a good way to experiment with colours and techniques side by side.

Where to begin! As a complete novice I always find starting a hurdle, but Esther was on hand with expert advice and gentle encouragement.

At this point the room was silent as the artists were totally engrossed in the work in front of them.

All too soon the day started drawing (no pun intended) to an end, Esther answered any lingering questions and passed out final tips and techniques and the group pulled together their days efforts.

It really was a fantastic day, it was my first time at the Nairn Arts Society and my first ever Workshop in painting. It was a brilliant experience and I was warmly welcomed by everyone, Esther’s relaxed and friendly teaching methods meant everyone felt at ease and I’m sure everyone came away with more knowledge than when they arrived. I know I most definitely did. And what did this workshop cost? A super value £30, where else can you get almost five hours of tuition for this amount! Outstanding value.

If this has whetted your appetite then keep an eye on our our “workshops” page at https://nairnartssociety.co.uk/workshops/ to see when the next one is taking place. Don’t miss out as the places fill up very quickly!

November 02 – 29 2023

It is that time of year when The Nairn Arts Society holds it Annual Exhibition, a fantastic time to call in at the Nairn Community and Arts Centre and check out some of the incredible work our members have submitted.  It really is a great time to snap up a bit of original artwork at an amazing price.  Definitely not to be missed!

October 2023

Our October workshop went very well and all members thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Kay ran her workshop on Saturday 28th October where she taught members how to draw animals using pencils and pastels.

Members created silhouette drawings on black paper as a quick tutorial and then drew their own coloured drawing of a different subject as their final piece.

The members thoroughly enjoyed the session and the results were amazing.

Saturday 09 September 2-23

Professional Artist Jonathon Shearer took a workshop on Saturday 9th September in the Laing Hall.

The subject of this workshop was “Landscapes in the Mediums of Acrylics or Oils. We had a fantastic full house of twelve members enjoying their day and the results even though not finished looked amazing.

Are you a Nairn Arts Society member and would like to take part in a workshop? Then just head over to our “workshop” page and see if anything takes your fancy.

Saturday 06 August 2023

Welcome to the first ever Blog for the Nairn Arts Society.

Today was an exciting day as we hosted an open house to raise some funds for the society. Running from 10:00 until 16:00 we were over the moon to welcome many visitors through the doors of Laing Hall, some were members of the Nairn Arts Society coming down to lend their support, others were local people nipping in for a quick look and a good number were holiday makers walking past and called in to pick up a bargain of an original work of art at an extremely reasonable price.

The hall was looking stunning thanks to Exhibition Coordinator Christine, it takes a massive amount of work for all the exhibits to be hung and the craft to be displayed and she did an outstanding job.

And the visitors were treated with an huge selection of various crafts and paintings in a whole range of mediums, below is just a small sample of what was on offer:

It was a great day with a very respectable amount being made towards the upkeep of Laing Hall. A big thank you goes out to everyone who supported the day, the various businesses that displayed posters for us, for the popular Facebook pages ” Nairn Rocks”  “Nairn Bid”  “Nairn our town our views”Nairn crafters and artists” “nairns buy swaps and sell”  and Visit Nairn for advertising on their pages and most of all the lovely people who took time to come and visit, spend some time browsing and buying the art and crafts on display.”

Thank you all!
